Befriending Migrant Workers (BMW)
Befriending and blessing the migrant workers among us
God’s heart is that all nations shall be saved.
Singapore, being an international hub, attracts many people including migrant workers from Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam and the Philippines, who have chosen to make their living here. They come with hopes, dreams, and are often in search of a better life.
Started in 2018, BMW aims to reach out to migrant workers in our community, by sharing God’s love and blessings with the people He brings into our midst each week. Our migrant worker friends live amongst us in Singapore and this provides us with the best opportunity to befriend them, reflecting Cathedral’s calling to ‘be a House of Prayer for all nations and to be God’s blessing to sojourners’.
Come and be God’s blessings to the sojourners of our home Singapore. Indeed, the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few.
Deuteronomy 10:18, 19
He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.
Prayer Points
- New migrant workers (MWs) to be able to settle down in a new environment quickly, overcoming any culture-shock and integrate smoothly into the community.
- Employers to be kind, patient and provide a safe working environment with proper welfare to the MWs.
- MWs’ families back in their homeland; for their health and safety.
- SAC members be keen and willing to volunteer as befrienders, reaching out to the MWs through various activities eg, teaching English, kopi-chats, cooking classes, etc.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Be a friend
- Keeping pace with current affairs in Myanmar amidst the social unrest, we invite interested English-speaking church members and regular visitors to join the Myanmar Worship Service every Sunday from 2pm – 4pm and be a friend to those among us who are far away from home.
- Connect with the Myanmar community and understand their culture, home situations, and challenges in the hope of rebuilding their nation. Build long-term bridges and bonds with them by joining them for lunch together after service. Volunteers should be able to commit for a period of one year.
Teach English
- Teaching English helps our migrant worker friends improve their speaking competency and confidence, which greatly benefits them and their employers as they work in Singapore.
- Classes are held every Sunday (except during term breaks) and begin from 11.30am.
- In meeting this need, we hope to manifest the love of Christ to them. We are looking for volunteers who have a heart and burden for migrant workers in Singapore, with a strong command of the language and the ability to communicate English as a second language in a simple and understandable manner to our Myanmar friends.
- Volunteers should be able to commit for a period of at least six months.
